Opening Drive
Opening Drive is an intraday breakout strategy for day trading on 1-minute to 15-minute bars.
Opening Drive is an intraday breakout strategy for day trading on 1-minute to 15-minute bars. Some sessions open with genuine directional conviction: the opening auction's order flow carries straight through the first half hour and keeps driving. The strategy buys when the OPENINGDRIVE() pattern confirms that momentum — a close above the completed opening range high, on elevated volume, above the session VWAP — and exits when price closes back below VWAP, the sign the drive has been absorbed. It is the momentum-confirmed evolution of Opening Range Breakout: ORB buys any poke above the range; Opening Drive demands the participation and VWAP posture that separate a drive from post-open drift.
It is a medium, intraday, 1M–15M strategy for day trading.
How it trades
An opening drive is one of the most reliable intraday tells: buyers who dominate the open and keep pressing after the opening range completes tend to control the session.
| Leg | Test | Filters out |
|---|---|---|
| Breakout | Close above the 30-minute opening range high | Chop still inside the range |
| Participation | Bar volume ≥ 1.5× the average opening-range bar volume | Quiet drift to a marginal new high |
| Momentum alignment | Close above the session VWAP | Late re-tests after the drive has faded |
Buy (confirmed opening drive):
OPENINGDRIVE()
Sell (VWAP exit - the drive has been absorbed):
Close < VWAP()
OPENINGDRIVE() is silent (null) during each session's first 30 minutes while the opening range is still forming — no signal can exist before the range it breaks out of is complete.
When it works best
Best on liquid, heavily-traded names whose opens attract real institutional flow — index heavyweights and high-beta large-caps — on 1m–15m bars. It captures the strong trend days that are decided in the first hour. Its stated limitation is that it works mainly at market open: the setup exists only in the morning, at most once or twice per session, so it stays flat most of the day. The VWAP exit also concedes ground on sharp midday reversals; pairing it with a time-based flatten (exit before the close) is the natural production hardening, since the signal is strictly an opening phenomenon.
