Volume Profile Breakout

Volume Profile Breakout is a trending, swing strategy built on an institutional concept: the Point of Control (POC) — the price level where the most volume has traded over a recent window. That level acts as a magnet/fair-value area; a decisive close above it, confirmed by strong volume, signals that buyers have taken control and price is likely to trend higher. The trade exits when price falls back below the POC.
How it trades
| Ingredient | Meaning |
|---|---|
| POC(n) | Point of Control — the heaviest-volume price level over the last n candles |
| Volume | The current candle's traded volume |
| AVGVOLUME(m) | Average volume over the last m candles (breakout confirmation) |
Buy (breakout):
Close > POC(30) AND Volume > AVGVOLUME(20)
Sell (breakdown):
Close < POC(30)
Requiring both a POC break and above-average volume is what distinguishes a genuine, participated breakout from a thin drift through the control level.
When it works best
Works best on liquid, trending names with genuine, well-distributed volume, where the Point of Control reflects real institutional participation and a volume-backed break of it tends to follow through. On thin or erratically-traded instruments the profile is dominated by a handful of prints and the control level is far less meaningful.
